Plaque can turn into calculus (tartar) in just twenty four hours if not removed from your teeth! Daily home cleaning can help control plaque and tartar, but hard to reach areas will always need special attention.
After completing periodontal treatment, your dentist and dental hygienist will recommend regular maintenance cleanings (periodontal cleanings), typically four times a year. During these cleanings, the health of your pocket depths will be carefully checked to ensure they are healthy. Plaque and calculus that is difficult for you to remove daily will be removed from above and below the gum line.
Your appointment will typically include more than just a periodontal cleaning and evaluation.
The examination of diagnostic x-rays is crucial for detecting decay, tumors, cysts, and bone loss, as well as determining tooth and root positions. It is also important to check existing restorations, tooth decay on all surfaces, and screen for oral cancer in various areas of the mouth. Additionally, oral hygiene recommendations will be provided, including suggestions for oral hygiene aids like electric toothbrushes and fluorides. Finally, teeth polishing will be done to remove any remaining stain and plaque.
It is important to practice good oral hygiene and schedule regular periodontal cleanings to maintain dental health and manage periodontal disease effectively.
